END OF TERM AND REPORTS
As Term Two comes to a close, I would like to thank our entire College community for your ongoing support and the collective efforts of the past ten weeks.
With Semester One Reports now released, K-10, I encourage families to take some time to discuss these with their children using a Growth Mindset approach. There will no doubt be many aspects to celebrate, and perhaps a few areas that could benefit from further focus in the second half of the year. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher — those conversations can continue into Term Three.
To all of our students, I wish you a safe and restful break. I hope you return refreshed, re-energised, and ready for all the learning and opportunities that lie ahead in the back half of 2025. For our senior students — particularly Year 11 and Year 12 — I remind you of the importance of finding a good balance over the break: time for revision, study and preparation, yes, but also time for sleep, exercise, connection and rest.
A special thank you to our staff. Term Two is often one of the most demanding terms, yet your professionalism, dedication, and unwavering care for our students never go unnoticed. Thank you for the many ways you contribute — both in the classroom and beyond.
CYCLIC INQUIRY
Over the past few weeks, we’ve welcomed colleagues from the Catholic Education Office, Diocese of Wollongong, as part of our latest School Review — a refreshed and more reflective process now known as Cyclic Inquiry.
A mixture of Diocesan and external reviewers external to CEDoW spent time at the College, engaging with our leadership team, exploring data and results, and speaking with parents, Fr Bosco, staff, and students. Their focus was not just on outcomes, but also on the culture, direction, and day-to-day reality of learning and teaching at St Francis.
The initial feedback was incredibly affirming — there is a strong sense that we are doing many things very well. When the full report is released in mid-Term 3, I look forward to sharing its findings and recommendations with the broader community.
STAFFING
At the end of this term, we bid farewell to Mrs Alex Mediati, who concludes her tenure with us after three and a half years as Assistant Principal – Religious Education, Identity, and Mission.
Alex has been a valued and much-loved member of our community, bringing warmth, deep faith, and a strong commitment to social justice. Whether leading liturgies, supporting students and staff, or simply sharing a kind word, Alex has always led with heart.
We thank her for the care, energy, and integrity she has brought to St Francis, and we wish her every blessing for what comes next. She leaves with our deep gratitude and best wishes.
I look forward in the new term to making an announcement regarding our new Assistant Principal: Religious Education, Identity and Mission.
We also farewell Mrs Maria Dao, Science Teacher. Ms Dao leaves us after a number of years of dedicated service in the Science Faculty. Recruitment for a replacement teacher will be finalised in the coming weeks.
As per my recent Compass notification, I also reiterate my congratulations to Mrs Melissa Vella, who has been successful in her substantive application to be the Principal at Thomas More Ruse. We wish her every success in her new community.
We wish Mrs Jasmina Rooke and Mrs Sarah Mirabito every success as they commence maternity leave. A combination of Mrs Joanne Griffin and Mrs Keely Duncan (Aschenwald) (returning next term) will be covering Mrs Rooke’s classes. Most of Mrs Mirabito’s classes will be covered by Miss Sarah McGinnes.
Mr Craig Davidson will be covering Mr Thanh Nguyen’s classes over the course of his extended paternity leave.
Miss Erica Ventura-Motta will be covering Mr Suneil Buck’s classes during his extended paternity leave.
We also congratulate Mr Phil Stonefield on his permanent appointment as our 5-12 Leader of Learning: Science. Mr Stonefield has been in the acting role during Mrs Michell Linkenbagh’s recent maternity leave and has a real commitment to quality deep learning in the Faculty. As Mrs Linkenbagh steps down from this role, we thank her for her wonderful work over the years in setting up and establishing our Science Faculty at the College.
Next term we also welcome our new 7-12 Diverse Learning Coordinator, Mrs Liz Bates, who comes to us from a variety of past leadership positions and/or roles working with diverse needs students.
PRAYER
As we come to the end of the term, we pause in gratitude and hope:
Loving God,
Thank you for the learning, growth, and care shared throughout this term. Inspired by Blessed Edmund Rice and St Francis of Assisi, may we continue to walk with compassion, humility, and joy.
Bless our students, staff, and families with rest and renewal over the break. Strengthen our bonds, refresh our spirits, and guide us safely back, ready to embrace new opportunities with open minds and open hearts.
–Amen.

Year 12 Studies of Religion 2Unit Guest Speaker: Natalie’s Journey to Judaism and Jewish Marriage
As part of their in-depth study into significant practices and religious expression, Year 12 Studies of Religion 2Unit students had the opportunity to hear from Natalie, a close friend of mine, who generously shared her deeply personal journey of conversion to Judaism and her Jewish marriage ceremony via Zoom.
Natalie’s story gave students a unique insight into the lived experience behind the syllabus. She addressed thought-provoking questions such as whether her decision to convert was based solely on her relationship or grounded in a personal spiritual connection with Judaism. She explained what initially drew her to the faith, how she learned about Jewish beliefs and traditions before and after conversion.
Students were particularly engaged as Natalie described how her family responded to her decision to convert and to her Jewish wedding, including symbolic rituals such as breaking the glass linked to central beliefs of the religious tradition. She also reflected on which parts of the ceremony held the most meaning for her and why.
This session powerfully connected classroom content to real-life faith journeys and enhanced student understanding of the expression of Jewish beliefs through marriage.
We wish to express our thanks to Natalie for her time in sharing her experiences of faith.

A Heartfelt Farewell – and See You Soon
As I prepare to finish my time at St Francis Catholic College, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to this extraordinary community. Over the years, it has been a profound privilege to serve in a College that not only educates minds but shapes hearts through faith, compassion, and hope.
One of the greatest blessings of my time at SFCC has been the opportunity to teach and minister across all areas of the College—from the wonder and energy of the Junior Years, to the growth and curiosity of the Middle Years, and the maturity and leadership of the Senior Years. Each stage has offered its own joys and challenges, and I am grateful to have witnessed the journey of so many students as they have grown in both faith and learning.
SFCC is a community where the Touchstones of Gospel Spirituality, Inclusive Community, Liberating Education, and Justice and Solidarity are more than guiding principles—they are the living heartbeat of our daily life together. Inspired by the example of the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice, we are called to serve with humility, to act with justice, and to love with courage. These values have been central to my vocation, and they will remain with me always.
To the students: thank you for your spirit, your questions, your laughter, and your willingness to explore life, learning, and faith with open hearts.
To the staff: thank you for your friendship, your dedication, and the generous way you share your gifts to make this place one of deep care and excellence.
To the families and wider community: thank you for your support, trust, and commitment to our shared mission.
While I now step into a new role within the Catholic Life, Education and Mission team at Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong, I do not feel like a stranger. My connection to SFCC remains strong, and I look forward to visiting and continuing to support the important work that makes this College such a vibrant and hope-filled community.
Wishing you every blessing in the years to come.
With heartfelt thanks,
Mrs Alexandra Mediati

Kindergarten Cultural Sharing Day
On Monday, the 1st of July, the College Hall came alive with colour, music, and joy as our Kindergarten students celebrated Cultural Sharing Day. This special event was the culmination of our learning in History, where students have been exploring the rich traditions, foods, and celebrations from cultures around the world.
Our Kindergarten students proudly took to the stage to perform two delightful cultural items they had been practising in class. Their enthusiasm and confidence shone brightly, and both performances were thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Families were then invited to join their children for a multicultural morning tea. A wonderful selection of food from a range of cultural backgrounds was shared picnic-style across long tables, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere. It was beautiful to see children engaging with different flavours and proudly talking about the food from their own culture.
To finish the event, students gathered in their classrooms for a short reflection where they shared something about their own culture. These thoughtful responses showed just how meaningful the experience was for our young learners.
We would like to thank our families for their incredible support, generosity, and participation. Cultural Sharing Day was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate the uniqueness each family brings to our Kindergarten.
Mrs Megan King, Mrs Diana Shuker & Ms Erin Radl

Thank you very much to our parents and carers here at St Francis for another wonderful term. Our students have worked hard this term to implement feedback from their teacher and grow in their ability to be flexible mathematicians. As we move into a new semester, the topics and skills students will learn will be more complex and I encourage all parents to keep an eye on the curriculum note that will be available at the beginning of next term.
Classroom Spotlight: Year 2
In Year 2, students have been learning about using positional language to describe the location of objects and places. Students have designed a map of the school and created instructions for Kindergarten students.

Year 5 Incursion - The Australian Gold Rush
Year 5 Goldfields Incursion
Year 5 blasted back into the Australian Gold Rush in 1854. We dressed up as miners and other people during the time of the Gold Rush. We got to participate in various activities to earn shillings and to get our mining licence. On the day the Joes came and arrested diggers for not having their licences with them! They needed to go to "gaol". Hopefully next time they will all know how important it is to keep their miners licence on them. We also did some of the games they did such as ring toss, marble games and hula hoops and we even mined for gold!
We got to make damper which traditionally went on the fire, it was delicious! We had jam and butter and it made our damper 10x better! There was one activity we all abominated which was……. NEEDLE WORK! We had to put it through a corner, tie a knot and then knit through each hole again and again and again!
We had such a good day learning about the Goldfields!

Year 7 MasterChef Heats Up with Collaboration, Creativity and Community Spirit
In an exciting first for SFCC, our Year 7 students took part in the inaugural Year 7 MasterChef, and what an outstanding success it was! With 40 enthusiastic students stepping up to the challenge, the event showcased not only impressive culinary talents but also the collaborative and pastoral strengths that define our college community.
Working individually and some in small teams, students were tasked with creating, baking, and presenting their dishes to a panel of student judges. The atmosphere was filled with energy and excitement as students supported one another, shared ideas, and worked together to "cook up a storm." This event provided a unique opportunity for students to build teamwork skills, foster positive peer relationships, and develop confidence in a fun and meaningful way. I thank the families who allowed their children to prepare their creations at home.
The judging panel – made up of fellow Year 7 students – offered thoughtful and encouraging feedback. It was wonderful to see the mutual respect and support as judges recognised the effort and creativity behind each dish.
The students who baked demonstrated not only skill in the kitchen but also commitment to the College’s wider life. Their culinary creations were nothing short of outstanding and reflected innovation, attention to detail, and genuine passion. Each student involved should be incredibly proud of their efforts.
Adding to the spirit of the occasion, all funds raised went directly to the Winter Appeal, reflecting our College's ongoing commitment to service and social justice. Through their contributions, our Year 7 students have not only supported each other but also extended compassion to those in need.
Well done to all students involved in this wonderful initiative – your teamwork, creativity, and generous hearts truly made this event one to remember!

Year 8 First Aid & Vaping Awareness Incursion
On Monday, the 16th of June 2025, our Year 8 students took part in a highly engaging and educational First Aid Awareness and Vaping Education Incursion, led by our dedicated PDHPE teaching team. The incursion provided students with hands-on training and meaningful discussions aimed at building both emergency response skills and critical awareness around vaping.
Throughout the day, students rotated through a series of practical sessions that included:
- CPR training on adult and infant dummies
- The DRSABCD emergency response plan
- Using a defibrillator (AED)
- Treating asthma, anaphylaxis, and epilepsy
- Practising with training EpiPens
- The physical and mental health effects of vaping
- How peer pressure and marketing influence adolescent choices
- Refusal strategies and assertive communication skills
- Health promotion through poster creation and interactive modules
The incursion was met with enthusiasm and thoughtful engagement, with students sharing many positive takeaways:
“Learning about CPR and using an EpiPen helped me feel more confident if I ever need to help someone in an emergency.”
“I found the vaping modules really eye-opening, especially learning how addiction starts and how companies target young people.”
“The practicals were my favourite – being able to try CPR and EpiPen training made it more fun and realistic.”
“I now know the differences in performing CPR on adults versus babies, which was something I had never learned before.”
“The incursion taught me real-life skills that I will carry with me forever – it was fun, engaging, and important.”
We commend our Year 8 students for their active participation and insightful reflections. A special thank you to our PDHPE staff for designing such a meaningful and relevant learning experience. This incursion not only aligned with the PDHPE curriculum but also fostered a sense of personal responsibility, community care, and lifelong preparedness.

Year 11 HMS ACPE Excursion
Exploring Health and Sport Science in Action at Sydney Olympic Park
On Tuesday, the 17th of June, our Year 11 Health and Movement Science (HMS) students participated in an exciting and enriching excursion to the Australian College of Physical Education (ACPE), located at Sydney Olympic Park. This experience offered students a unique opportunity to explore university-level learning and discover how theory translates into practical applications within the world of sport, health, and fitness.
Throughout the day, students engaged in hands-on workshops and theoretical sessions focused on exercise science, fitness testing, and energy systems. They gained valuable insights into how the body produces energy during different forms of physical activity and how elite athletes use performance data to optimise training.
A key highlight was the VO₂ Max testing, where students observed how oxygen uptake is measured during intense exercise—an advanced method used to assess aerobic endurance. Students also had the chance to participate in practical sessions, including sprint testing, gym-based exercises, and designing fitness routines relevant to real-world applications.
Student Reflections – Highlights from the Day
“I learnt about the three energy systems: ATP-PC, glycolytic, and oxidative. It was great to see these concepts applied during our practical activities like the 20m sprint race.”
“It was really exciting to use the gym and come up with our own list of exercises—it felt like real personal training!”
“The VO₂ Max test was really interesting. Watching a classmate go through the test helped me understand how athletes measure and improve their fitness levels.”
“I gained a better understanding of what ATP is and how it works in the body. The connection between science and sport really stood out to me.”
“I now understand how careers in sport and health can be shaped through hands-on learning and industry pathways. It made me think seriously about future university options.”
This excursion was a valuable opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of the HMS curriculum while gaining exposure to pathways in health, sport science, and physical education. We thank ACPE for hosting such an interactive day and commend our students for their enthusiastic participation and mature engagement throughout the experience.
