Year 12 Studies of Religion 2Unit Guest Speaker: Natalie’s Journey to Judaism and Jewish Marriage

As part of their in-depth study into significant practices and religious expression, Year 12 Studies of Religion 2Unit students had the opportunity to hear from Natalie, a close friend of mine, who generously shared her deeply personal journey of conversion to Judaism and her Jewish marriage ceremony via Zoom.

Natalie’s story gave students a unique insight into the lived experience behind the syllabus. She addressed thought-provoking questions such as whether her decision to convert was based solely on her relationship or grounded in a personal spiritual connection with Judaism. She explained what initially drew her to the faith, how she learned about Jewish beliefs and traditions before and after conversion.

Students were particularly engaged as Natalie described how her family responded to her decision to convert and to her Jewish wedding, including symbolic rituals such as breaking the glass linked to central beliefs of the religious tradition. She also reflected on which parts of the ceremony held the most meaning for her and why.

This session powerfully connected classroom content to real-life faith journeys and enhanced student understanding of the expression of Jewish beliefs through marriage.

We wish to express our thanks to Natalie for her time in sharing her experiences of faith.

A Heartfelt Farewell – and See You Soon

As I prepare to finish my time at St Francis Catholic College, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to this extraordinary community. Over the years, it has been a profound privilege to serve in a College that not only educates minds but shapes hearts through faith, compassion, and hope.

One of the greatest blessings of my time at SFCC has been the opportunity to teach and minister across all areas of the College—from the wonder and energy of the Junior Years, to the growth and curiosity of the Middle Years, and the maturity and leadership of the Senior Years. Each stage has offered its own joys and challenges, and I am grateful to have witnessed the journey of so many students as they have grown in both faith and learning.

SFCC is a community where the Touchstones of Gospel Spirituality, Inclusive Community, Liberating Education, and Justice and Solidarity are more than guiding principles—they are the living heartbeat of our daily life together. Inspired by the example of the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice, we are called to serve with humility, to act with justice, and to love with courage. These values have been central to my vocation, and they will remain with me always.

To the students: thank you for your spirit, your questions, your laughter, and your willingness to explore life, learning, and faith with open hearts.

To the staff: thank you for your friendship, your dedication, and the generous way you share your gifts to make this place one of deep care and excellence.

To the families and wider community: thank you for your support, trust, and commitment to our shared mission.

While I now step into a new role within the Catholic Life, Education and Mission team at Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong, I do not feel like a stranger. My connection to SFCC remains strong, and I look forward to visiting and continuing to support the important work that makes this College such a vibrant and hope-filled community.

Wishing you every blessing in the years to come.

With heartfelt thanks,

Mrs Alexandra Mediati
