WHAT DOES EASTER MEAN TO US?
At St Francis Catholic College, Easter isn’t just a date on the calendar or a break from routine—it’s the heart of who we are as a faith-filled community. As we journey through Holy Week together, we’re invited to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the true meaning of this sacred season.
Looking Beyond the Chocolate and Bunnies
In today’s world, Easter is often wrapped up in images of eggs, bunnies, and baskets. While these symbols have their place, they can sometimes overshadow what Easter is really about. For us, it’s a time to slow down and consider the deeper message: a message of sacrifice, love, and hope that speaks to each of us personally.
The journey through Holy Week
Holy Week begins this coming Sunday (Palm Sunday), where we remember Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, greeted with palms and praise. This sets the tone for the days that follow - the most sacred in our Church year.
- On Holy Thursday, we reflect on the Last Supper and the powerful act of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet—a reminder of service and humility.
- Good Friday draws us into the sorrow of Jesus’ crucifixion. It’s a solemn day of prayer, fasting, and the Stations of the Cross, helping us understand the depth of His love and sacrifice.
- Holy Saturday is a quiet, reflective day as we wait in hope, remembering that even in the silence, God is at work.
The joy of Easter Sunday
Then comes Easter Sunday—the most joyful celebration in our faith. It’s the moment that brings it all together. Jesus has risen, and with that comes the promise that love is stronger than death, and hope is greater than despair. Easter reminds us that the resurrection of Christ is the foundation of our Christian belief.
Why it matters to us
The Easter story isn’t just something we remember—it’s something we’re called to live. It challenges us to be people of kindness, humility, forgiveness, and love. It encourages us to serve others, to walk with compassion, and to always hold onto hope, especially when life gets tough.
At St Francis Catholic College, we walk this journey as one community. We celebrate, we reflect, and we grow in faith together. May this Easter bring peace to your heart, hope to your home, and a renewed sense of purpose in your life.
Wishing all our students, families and staff a holy and happy Easter. God bless!
STUDENTS INSIDE INTERNAL GATES
As an important safety issue it is critical to note that the duty of care for St Francis students commences at 8.00am every morning.
Parents/carers with students in the K-6 space can access the services provided by the CatholicCare-run OOSH on site prior to 8.00am.
Parents/carers are not allowed to drop students off inside the internal gates before 8am - this includes along the internal roads. There are no staff on supervision at this time and last week there was a near miss with early delivery drivers and students who should not have been allowed on College grounds.
K-6 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
What a fantastic day we had on Monday at the K-6 Athletics Carnival held at the Narellan Sports Hub. With the sun shining and a cool breeze sweeping across the oval, it was the perfect backdrop for a day full of energy, fun, and College spirit.
A huge congratulations to all our competitors for giving it their all across the events – your effort, encouragement of one another, and positive attitudes were wonderful to see. And to those who were involved in non-competitive activities – thank you! You helped create a warm, inclusive atmosphere.
We also want to recognise the many parents/carers and/or family members who joined us on the day. Your presence and support mean so much to the students and staff alike. A special thank you goes to Miss Laskaris for her organisation and leadership – her work behind the scenes ensured the day ran smoothly from start to finish.
It was a day full of colour, smiles, and College pride – a real celebration of what makes our community so special.
FEDERAL ELECTION on 3 May 2025 – What you need to know to support your local Catholic school.
To help families and staff stay informed during the election, the National Catholic Education Commission (NCEC) has produced a two-page document, Catholic Education Benefits All Australians, outlining Catholic education's key priorities and its contribution to the community. This two-page document is attached as a flyer at the end of my Section.
In summary, the priorities are:
- Ensure affordability and choice – every family should have the option of a Catholic education
- Address hardship, wellbeing, and disadvantage – every student deserves access to quality education and the right support, no matter their background
- Build and innovate for the future – investing in school infrastructure and support for early childhood education.
Further information for parents/carers is available on the website: https://ncec.catholic.edu.au/2025-federal-election/
EASTER PRAYER THOUGHTS
This Easter may you have a peaceful and blessed time.
May the words of our last two Popes inspire:
“Dear brothers and sisters, Easter does not work magic. Just as the Israelites found the desert awaiting them on the far side of the Red Sea, so the Church, after the resurrection, always finds history filled with joy and hope, grief and anguish. And yet, this history is changed, it is marked by a new and eternal covenant, it is truly open to the future. For this reason, saved by hope, let us continue our pilgrimage, bearing in our hearts the song that is ancient and yet ever new: “Let us sing to the Lord: glorious his triumph!”.
–Pope Benedict XVI, 2010
“Today, as pilgrims in search of hope, we cling to you, Risen Jesus. We turn our backs on death and open our hearts to you, for you are Life itself.”
–Pope Francis, 2020
From the Assistant Principal - Pastoral Care
Uniform Transition
As the seasons change and the weather is somewhat unpredictable, we move into a period of transition with the wearing of the College uniform.
Please note that whichever uniform is worn, it should be in its entirety: full Summer or full Winter uniform.
Please check the diary for the descriptions of either. It may be a good time to get the school blazer dry cleaned.
Dismissal
We will be revisiting the procedures around dismissal at the end of the school day in Week 1. All parents are asked to adhere to teacher requests if you are asked to move or move on. Details of dismissal will be republished at the beginning of Term 2.
ANZAC Assembly
Thank you to all staff and parents who have submitted information for the Honour Roll. This will be closed off today Friday 11th of April.

Holy Week: Pilgrims of Hope Walking with Christ
Holy Week is the most sacred time in the Catholic liturgical calendar—a profound spiritual pilgrimage through the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As pilgrims of hope, we do not journey as passive observers, but as active participants in the mystery of salvation, carrying with us the hope that Christ's love triumphs over sin and death.
We begin this sacred week with Palm Sunday (this weekend), waving palms as signs of victory and hope. Jesus enters Jerusalem not as a worldly king but as the Prince of Peace, riding on a donkey. Even as the shadow of the Cross looms, our journey begins with the reminder that hope is not the absence of suffering, but the presence of Christ amid it.
On Holy Thursday, we walk into the Upper Room where Jesus gives us the gift of Himself in the Eucharist, and shows us how to live as disciples through the washing of feet. As pilgrims of hope, we are reminded that true greatness lies in humble service, and that God is with us in the breaking of the bread.
Good Friday leads us to the foot of the Cross. It is a day of silence, sorrow, and awe. But even in the darkest moment of the Passion, we are not without hope. Jesus' suffering is not in vain—it is the ultimate act of love that opens the gates of eternal life. As pilgrims of hope, we carry the Cross with Him, trusting that new life is on the horizon.
Holy Saturday is a day of waiting, a sacred pause between death and resurrection. In the stillness, we remember that hope often grows in silence and uncertainty. And when the Easter Vigil breaks forth, it is a powerful reminder that light always pierces the darkness. The fire, the readings, the sacraments, and the Alleluia proclaim that Christ is risen, and so our hope is not in vain.
As Catholics, Holy Week reminds us that to follow Christ is to journey through suffering and joy, death and life. To be a pilgrim of hope is to walk with faith in the promise of the Resurrection, allowing the story of Jesus to shape our lives and the world around us.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to all who contributed generously to our Project Compassion campaign this Lent. Your support is a sign of solidarity, compassion, and shared hope in action.
May the peace and joy of the Risen Lord fill your hearts and homes this Easter. We wish you and your families a blessed and restful break—and may you return in Term 2 renewed in spirit, and filled with new hope in the resurrected Christ.

Term 1 has been an exciting one for Youth Ministry at SFCC. Our devoted and enthusiastic Youth Engagement Leaders have immersed themselves in faith-filled initiatives and are on track to fulfilling their roles as pilgrims of hope in this Jubilee Year.
Our weekly Bible Prayer Group sessions have had a Lenten focus this term. Each week our student presenters have taken a theme from Catholic Social Teaching, linked this to scripture, and have challenged the audience to undertake ‘mission habits’ to make a difference in their lives and the lives of those around them. The YELs have also played a fundamental role in promoting various Project Compassion initiatives around the College this term, including an Easter Jar guessing competition and a House Colour Mufti Day.
A great success has been our ‘Walk for Compassion’ initiative which has encouraged students from Kindy through to Year 12, to be active and faithful as they journey around the school in a spirit of joy and hope.
Thank you to the year groups who also participated in our Project Compassion Coin Trail. The money collected was amazing, however the collaboration and commitment demonstrated by students was by far the best part.
Overall, Term 1 has been a great success and a testament to the faith of our students at St Francis.

Year 12 Investigating Science Excursion to ANSTO
On Monday, 10th of March, Year 12 Investigating Science went on an excursion to the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) at Lucas Heights. ANSTO is a statutory body of the Australian Government and is responsible for nuclear research and the production of radioisotopes for nuclear medicine.
Year 12 Investigating Science went to ANSTO to engage in Science education through learning resources, tours and presentations, gaining insights into nuclear science and technology and exploring potential STEM careers. Additionally, the excursion helped students prepare for their upcoming assessment task, encouraging them to creatively communicate real-world applications of Science and Technology.
Year 10 History at the Sydney Jewish Museum
Eye opening experiences, personal first accounts and a new perspective on humanity.
The primary purpose of our visit to the Sydney Jewish Museum was to deepen our understanding of antisemitism and the Holocaust - one of history’s most devastating antisemitic events.
As Year 10 explored and interacted with the past, we were able to analyse primary sources that clearly demonstrated such anti-semetic attitudes. We saw the yellow ‘Star of David’ that was pinned to the uniforms of the Jewish population during the Holocaust.
Year 10 was also able to meet a survivor of the Holocaust, George Sternfeld. He was able to tell us the story of his flight to freedom. He explained that his parents who were initially separated by borders, and the Nazi’s occupation of Poland eventually found each other, and as refugees migrated to Russia, and eventually made their way to Australia.
George explained that after his experiences at the hands of the Nazi’s, he was able to find kindness and hope in Australia. He went on to tell Year 10 about his book ‘Chocolate and ANZAC Biscuits’, which recalls these events. George had left us with a powerful message too - he stressed that the only race is the human race.
This excursion allowed Year 10 to be immersed in history. We not only looked at the facts and figures, but human stories of those who were victims and survived. Our experiences at the Sydney Jewish Museum truly impacted us and enhanced our understanding of the past.

From the JY Mathematics Co-ordinator
“On Thursday, 3rd of April, Mrs Jeymour and 23 students from Years 3-6 were invited to spend the day at Sackville Public School for the Inquisitive Minds Mathematics Workshop. The Inquisitive Minds workshop is an amazing opportunity to expand our knowledge in mathematics. We spent the first part of the day working on challenging maths problems with a partner from our own school. For the second session of the day, we had to get out of our comfort zones and work on several maths problems with a partner from another school. The final part of the day was the Bridge Building challenge. Our school managed to achieve a 49cm bridge span. We learnt so many interesting and creative methods to solve maths problems. Inquisitive Minds was an unforgettable experience!”
“This was a trip I'll never forget, we all felt nervous but excited as well. When we arrived I must admit I felt a little bit scared as well, but got over it when we started to get engaged in all the fun things we did! We built bridges and did a maths relay, but the real fun was working with someone who we had just met and then learning about each other along the way. To me, this wasn't just maths, it was an experience that was pushing us way beyond our comfort zone and making new friends along the way!”
- Amelia C, Year 5

1 - Kingston D
2 - Samyra P
3 - Amelia C
Following on from our last article, we would like to congratulate the grade winners of World Maths Day! Klaudia C from Mr Rolfe’s Maths class topped the Year 3 cohort, and Castiel C from 4 Red achieved the highest score in Year 4. Both students demonstrated outstanding mathematical thinking and perseverance on the day — well done!

Year 9 Drama: Mastering Improvisation and Theatre Sports
Year 9 Drama students are actively engaging with the disciplines of improvisation and Theatre Sports, refining their ability to think quickly and construct compelling narratives throughout Term 1. Students have engaged their skills through structured exercises and performance-based challenges, enhancing their capacity for spontaneous creativity, effective collaboration, and developing writing skills.
In addition to their improvisational work, students are cultivating directorial skills by composing and directing their own monologues. This experience has enabled students to gain a deeper understanding of character development, scriptwriting, and dramatic cohesion. By assuming the dual roles of writer and director, they acquired valuable insight into the creative process of developing literary works for the stage.
Drama plays a crucial role in fostering personal and academic growth. It enhances communication skills, encourages teamwork, and builds confidence in public speaking. Furthermore, it allows students to explore emotional regulation, develop empathy, and gain a deeper understanding of human experiences. These skills are not only essential in the performing arts but also in everyday life, equipping students with the ability to express themselves effectively and adapt to various situations.
This unit serves not only to build confidence but also to develop leadership, communication, and artistic expression. Whether engaging in spontaneous scene work or crafting a compelling performance, Year 9 Drama students are acquiring essential skills.

Primary Athletics Carnival
On Monday, K-6 went to the Narellan Sports Hub for our Athletics Carnival. We had a bunch of fun activities to complete throughout the day and we could compete in certain events. The most popular event was the 100m race. Both competitive and non-competitive students got ribbons if they placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd. It was very fun and collaborative because we needed everyones' help to have fun and stay safe.
People were cheering on their friends and showing House spirit. We got to eat lunch with our parents and we also could have invited our friends to join us! Many students and teachers also dressed up to represent their house colour. Before the end of the carnival we had a teacher, parent, student relay. It was so exciting and students won!!! We were all cheering so much!
When we got back to the College, everyone rested from this fun day. It was not like any other Athletics Carnival. It took the teachers a bunch of hard work and dedication to plan this event.

Applying and studying in the UK
What it’s like to study in the UK as an international student, and how to apply to a UK University.
The UK is one of the world's most popular destinations for international students. As of academic year 2020/1, more than 600,000 international students have enrolled to study in the UK. Of these, more than 150,000 are from the EU.
You have a choice of more than 140 Universities and other Higher Education Institutions. Each offers a range of qualifications recognised around the world.
Tuition fees vary between institutions. Since Brexit, most EU and EEA nationals are no longer eligible for home fee status unless they're from Ireland or are already living in the UK and registered under the EU Settlement Scheme.
You’ll need to be aware of visa conditions, English language requirements, and work permit restrictions. Find out more on the UK Government website.
Use this guide as well as other information and advice found across our website. Our UK university rankings are a good place to start.

While the US application process is a holistic one with admissions officers taking into account the various aspects of your Common Application, your SAT and/or ACT and SAT Subject Test results often act as deciding factors as to whether or not your application is given a thorough reading by an admissions officer.
