Japanese Club
Did you read comics growing up?
Manga (漫画) is the term used for Japanese-style comics. The word Manga literally translates to “whimsical pictures”, and is believed to date back to the 12th century in the form of drawings found on scrolls. The popular manga style seen today gained popularity in the 1900s and includes classic titles such as One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, and Sailor Moon. If a Manga becomes extremely popular, it often is turned into an Anime (Japanese-style cartoon) series or a movie.
There is a range of different genres of Manga, with content ranging from history to science fiction and from teenage romance to profound themes about life. They can be commonly found in bookstores and convenience stores all over Japan. Some popular stylistic features of Japanese Manga include characters with large eyes, colourful hair, and comical facial expressions.
Students of the Japanese Club learned some basic manga drawing techniques and tried their best to draw characters and people resembling the classic Japanese manga style. Student work was also displayed in the Japanese room for all to enjoy.

For your next book that you can’t put down, why not try a Japanese Manga and relive the stories of your childhood.
