Year 11 RYDA Driver Safety Education Program Excursion

The Year 11 cohort engaged in the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program, (RYDA) at Cecil Park, Sydney International Shooting Centre on the 14th of March. The educators presented six informative workshops, involving self-evaluation surrounding potential risk-taking behaviours, (The ‘I’ in Drive), Overcoming Mindstate via well-being strategies (Mind Matters), Road Choices, Crash Investigators, and Drive S.O.S maintaining high levels of engagement and active participation amongst the students. The RYDA program was adapted to ensure relevancy and ongoing interaction with our Year 11 cohort, empowering students to contribute their ideas throughout group discussions. The educators imparted foundational knowledge, supplementing the aims of recent pastoral care lessons, particularly active citizenship. A physical demonstration led by Jamal and Sam provided a comprehensive understanding of vehicular maintenance, pedestrian road safety, and speed limits. The authentic and moving address by Ms. Fiona Luscombe communicated her lived experiences as a road-crash survivor; a true testament to RYDA’s pro-social intent of meaningfully educating the next generation of young Australian drivers. On behalf of the St. Francis Catholic College Community, we extend our gratitude and appreciation for Ms. Luscombe, having entrusted us with her vulnerability. As a year group, we admire her sheer courage and determination to educate the upcoming drivers of Australia’s roads, spreading awareness of road user safety. Like, Ms. Luscombe all of the RYDA educators communicated intentionally, with the interests of public and interpersonal welfare in mind. The RYDA program was an altogether remarkable experience, engaging the next generation of young drivers to operate and interact on the roads, safely.
